Born in Chengdu, China, Haoran Luo is a
filmmaker and photographer. His experience
with photography and belief in its ability to
enhance one’s perception has inspired his
filmmaking. He holds a BA in film studies,
cum laude, from Ohio State University and is
currently pursuing an MFA in filmmaking from
the Maryland Institute College of Art.
Director Statement
The Negative is a short film in which I explore the
negative space constructed among people in
modern life. We sometimes do not know how to
get close to people, especially strangers, to build
relationships. Like a film negative, we may find
a way to express our world but can do so only in
shapes that are inverted and discolored. But the
expression is true. So I believe there is always a
way to step out of the negative space and find
the courage to face the ones we love.
